School Radio
What’s it all about?

With a Social Media ban on the horizon for young people early in 2027, we should now start thinking about what we might do to fill that gap.

Radio or Podcasting gives young people a voice with the added benefit of an invisibility cloak. It levels the playing-field and provides the same opportunity to participate as those with more confidence.

I’ve been designing and building School Radio stations since 2009. Informed by many years of touring the UK with live broadcasting workshops, I’ve learnt just what young folks need. There’s a little more theatre or bling-factor needed than you’d expect. Expectations have changed amongst young folk, once talking into the edge of an iPad was enough to experience the trill of podcasting. Not anymore, they demand so much more currency to buy their attention.

All of my customers and we now have 401 of them as of October 2026, will have experienced the thrill, excitement and almost instant improvement in engagement and progress with language development through the use of their radio station.

I believe that with a focus on manual operation, pressing to start every jingle, music track and sound effect brings a greater level of engagement and satisfaction than any level of automation can. My HUB BROADCASTER stations are about learning and behavioural benefits rather than teaching young folks how to operate a commercial radio station. Ending your show at the end of break or lunch as the bell goes, will require some awareness and mathematical skills as it should.

Here’s a lovely example of young people working with me on a LIVE broadcast, this is Federation Sounds and my latest customer. I don’t usually host when I’m in the middle of some delivery training but YR4/5/6 insisted. Here they are broadcasting their third show as part of my delivery training activity, we simply threw this show together on the spot. You can hear for yourself just how well the team manage this and pull together.

Habits & Habitats

Staging is everything as is your brand. Getting it right from the start will make a huge impact to the success of your station. Young folks will up-their-game and work above their natural aptitude when given the right opportunity. Our job as educators is to scaffold that opportunity. This is Ysgol Y Bryn - Bryn Primary School in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, it’s John-Lloyd Williams’ (Headteacher) third radio station from us. He’s had one from us at all of the schools he’s worked in. John knows what inspires young people and decorated this old computer alcove himself and by himself we mean with the expert help from the site team at Bryn. The Album Art Wall is by Frank www.AskFrank.co who works out of Barry. The sound-proof cladding is from Amazon as is the low voltage lighting bars that fit inside the cladding strips. Foam squares on the left, also from Amazon Here.

Headlands School in Penarth had their HUB STUDIO from us in 2019 and have been broadcasting and making podcasts and successfully publishing them. In October 2026, we upgraded their online presence with a .WALES domain giving the station a stronger country specific identity. As many of our customers do, they broadcast on Mixcloud.com, the only live and podcast hosting site that encourages copyright music tracks. There are some guides and rules to follow but on the whole, anything you’ve purchased is permitted.

The School is run by Action for Children a registered charity that provides a number of services across this specialist sector.
